Neurosurgery Residency

Training Skilled Neurological Surgeons at Carilion Clinic

Mission and Vision

The Carilion Clinic Osteopathic Neurosurgery Residency develops exceptional osteopathic neurological surgeons to care for and improve the health of individuals, families and communities in Southwestern Virginia, surrounding areas and beyond.

The program utilizes community and university based clinical and educational resources and balances structured experiences with directed self-learning activities.  The program emphasizes the acquisition of critical thinking, scholarly inquiry, and research skills with a special focus on the development of professionalism and leadership skills.

Resident Education

The Carilion Clinic Osteopathic Neurosurgery Residency offers a structured, comprehensive, and challenging curriculum covering all facets of care of the neurosurgical patient. The program is supported by clinically active and seasoned faculty, and by a team of experienced physician assistants.

A significant amount of traditional, non-educational patient support work is eliminated in order to provide the resident with more valuable experiential and didactic learning opportunities.  Furthermore, resident call has been restricted to approximately every fifth to seventh night in order to provide time for the acquisition of neurosurgical knowledge and technical skills.

American Osteopathic Association (AOA) core competencies are incorporated into all aspects of the education process and are further supported by on-line courses through the Tufts Healthcare Institute (THCI).

The Carilion Clinic Osteopathic Neurosurgery Residency will qualify the resident to sit for the neurosurgery board certification examination as outlined by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
