Muscoloskeletal

Carilion Clinic offers specialized imaging services with fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists. Musculoskeletal radiology examines the musculoskeletal system and most commonly encompasses trauma, orthopaedic sports injury, rheumatologic diseases, and orthopaedic oncology. Musculoskeletal radiologists use an array of imaging services, including radiography, nuclear medicine bone scans, CT, MRI, arthrography and musculoskeletal ultrasound to diagnose all disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Musculoskeletal radiologists work closely with orthopaedic physicians and have expertise in performing arthrograms of the shoulders, hip, wrists and knees. This greatly aids proper diagnosis for orthopaedists and clinicians of sports medicine.

Specialists in musculoskeletal radiology also work closely with rheumatologists to aid in diagnostic accuracy and improve treatment decisions for osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows dynamic evaluation to help clinicians make better diagnosis of the patient, particularly in regard to soft tissue pathology or detecting fluid collections. It can also help detect bone surface abnormalities.

Services and studies performed by musculoskeletal radiologists include:

  • MRI Arthrography
  • CT Arthrography
  • Therapeutic Joint Injections
  • Bone and Joint MRI and CT
  • Bone Biopsies
  • Joint Aspirations
