Internal Medicine

Doctors of internal medicine focus on adult medicine and have had special training in the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Doctors of internal medicine are also sometimes referred to as "internists" or "general internists." Although internists may act as primary care physicians, they are not "family physicians," "family practitioners," or "general practitioners."

Family physicians and general practitioners see children as well as adults and some deliver babies or perform surgery. As specialists in adult care, internists have the skills and knowledge necessary to help you deal with a wide range of illnesses and health care issues.

The internists at Carilion Clinic are ready to care for any adult sickness, no matter how common or unusual it is, or how easy or hard it is. We are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and care for patients who have several different illnesses at the same time.

We also help adult patients stay healthy with education on wellness, healthy lifestyles, and disease prevention. We take care of people from their teen years through old age and manage their care even when other doctors are involved.

Carilion Clinic is one of the largest multi-specialty physician practices in Virginia, and includes the largest primary care group in the state.  Our primary care division consists of more than 200 physicians, nurse practitioners and physician Assistants in 70 offices across western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. These established practices offer medical expertise to their communities. And, because they live and work in the communities they serve, the doctors understand the healthcare needs of their neighbors and develop personal relationships with them.

Carilion Clinic's primary care centers are technologically progressive and have implemented a common electronic medical record for all locations.  Our offices are equipped with on-site laboratory and imaging services and minor procedure rooms.  We offer family-centered medical and prenatal care, diagnostics, and minor surgery.  Carilion Clinic's primary care providers can help you manage chronic conditions and develop a healthier lifestyle through patient education, disease prevention, and counseling services.
