Geriatric Services
Providing Excellent Geriatric Patient Care at Carilion Clinic in Virginia
Carilion Clinic Geriatric Services date back to the creation of the Carilion Center for Healthy Aging. In 1999, the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship was created followed in 2002 by the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. We were integrated into Carilion Clinic as a section of the Department of Medicine in 2007.
Carilion Clinic has made an institution-wide commitment to excellence in geriatrics and gerontology through a broad range of innovative and comprehensive programs in research, education and clinical care.
We conduct clinical research in aging, with an emphasis on wellness, innovative technologies, and transitions in care. We teach geriatrics medicine to medical students, psychiatry, internal medicine, and family medicine residents, attending physicians, and other health professionals.
The Section provides a variety of clinical services:
- a 28-bed inpatient Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit
- an inpatient Geriatrics Consultation Service
- a Geriatric Psychiatry program in regional long-tem care facilities
- Medical Direction and attending physician services at 5 long-term care facilities
- an outpatient consultative practice at the Carilion Center for Healthy Aging
As the population of our nation and our region ages, the Carilion Clinic Geriatrics Section is committed to training medical professionals in the specialty of geriatrics, enhancing research efforts on aging, and improving the health of the communities which we serve.
