Every Woman’s Life Program

Carilion Clinic is the administrative provider of Every Woman’s Life (EWL), a program that provides free mammograms, clinical breast exams, Pap tests and pelvic exams to women who are uninsured or underinsured.

Poverty is a significant risk factor for health problems, largely stemming from lack of access to healthcare. Every Woman’s Life helps Carilion Clinic meet its mission of providing quality care regardless of a person’s ability to pay.

EWL is federally funded through the Virginia Department of Health. To qualify, a woman must:

  • Be age 45 or older and a full-time Virginia resident
  • Have no health insurance or be underinsured (having a policy that does not cover mammograms and Pap tests, or being unable to pay the deductible)
  • Have a low annual income according to the program criteria (under 200 percent of the federal poverty line)

EWL pays for breast and cervical cancer screening and some diagnostic tests. Women who maintain eligibility are encouraged to return for annual screening.

Additional state funding makes it possible to provide breast and cervical cancer diagnostic testing to eligible women between the ages of 18-39 who are symptomatic for breast cancer or have abnormal Pap test results.

If an EWL participant is diagnosed with cancer, treatment may be covered through Medicaid and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act.
