The program’s faculty and residents will provide care to patients with a range of diseases and injuries in five hospitals throughout western Virginia, and will work with regional emergency medical services, Carilion Life-Guard flight crews, forensic nurse examiners and the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team. In addition, the residents’ curriculum will focus on academic medicine and clinical research with an emphasis on current, peer-reviewed evidence.

"We are committed to educating future health care leaders within the field of emergency medicine through academic rigor, exposure to a broad range of clinical experiences, and comprehensive supervision by a diverse faculty," Jennifer Casaletto, M.D., Emergency Medicine Program Director said.

"Working within Carilion Clinic’s integrated clinic model allows residents to work in a coordinated care environment that places our emergency department patients in the greater context of the healthcare system. Our priority is training Emergency Medicine residents who will be excellent evidence-based clinicians prepared to work in a department of their choosing."

Each year more than 170 medical residents join Carilion to complete their residency and fellowship training. The residency and fellowship programs operate under the larger umbrella of the Office of Academic Affairs.

In addition to the Emergency Medicine Residency, the Carilion Clinic Graduate Medical Education program consists of the following residencies and fellowships:
