Department of Emergency Medicine
Welcome From the Chair
Welcome to the Carilion Clinic Department of Emergency Medicine.
Our mission is to provide quality emergency care using an integrative, evidence-based medical approach and an atmosphere of care which promotes the health of our patients and the personal and professional development of our medical students, residents, faculty and staff.
John H. Burton, M.D., Chair
Our residents and faculty provide medical care and leadership in emergency care in six Carilion Clinic emergency departments throughout southwestern Virginia. Our flagship site at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) boasts a 100,000 sq. foot, state-of-the-art emergency department, built in 2007, that provides emergency care for more than 75,000 patients annually.
We offer the region’s only Level I Trauma Center with a catchment area of 1.3 million people. Aeromedical services are provided by Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation. In addition, CRMH offers a specialized pediatric emergency department, a forensic nursing program, an accredited chest pain center, and anticipates stroke center accreditation this summer. An electronic medical record system is utilized to provide accurate and efficient patient care throughout the Carilion Clinic system.
Our faculty has a broad spectrum of training and clinical experience backgrounds. We are involved nationally with ACEP, SAEM, and CORD as well as locally, training Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students, Carilion Clinic residents, and Jefferson College of Health Sciences physician assistant students. Excitement and anticipation are growing as we continue building an emergency medicine residency program.
Our research program is well established and supported by extramural funding as well as intramural funding and support provided by Virginia Tech-Carilion Research Institute and the Carilion Clinic Office of Sponsored Projects. We provide medical direction and support for the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Department SWAT team, local EMS including five counties and the City of Roanoke, and mass-gathering events in Southwestern Virginia including the Martinsville Speedway.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and home to the Appalachian Trail, Smith Mountain Lake, four state parks, and 140 miles of trails and greenway, Roanoke allows you to experience four spectacular seasons outdoors in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We invite you to further explore our site.
