CyberKnife Radiosurgery

At Carilion Clinic cancer patients have a unique treatment option using a dedicated radiosurgery device: the CyberKnife©.  CyberKnife© is a radiosurgery system that features a precisely controlled robotic arm which allows radiation energy to be directed at any part of the body from any direction.  This means that sterotactic radiosurgery is no longer limited to treating just brain tumors. The CyberKnife© System is a non-invasive alternative to surgery and is capable of treating tumors anywhere in the body with pin-point accuracy.  This minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue, improving outcomes and reducing recovery time.  And, the treatment is completed without uncomfortable screws or frames that are often used to immobilize patients during radiosurgery.   Patients who have a Cyberknife© procedure experience many benefits:

  • Accuracy – clinicians can confidently treat tumors with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissue by delivering high doses of radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy (within the width of a hair).
  • Flexibility – the system offers maneuverability and versatility that is unsurpassed by traditional radiation systems. By delivering radiation beams from virtually unlimited positions, the CyberKnife© System can treat tumors anywhere in the body from any angle including the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate.
  • Faster treatment – the system continually tracks tumor position, detects any tumor or patient movement, and automatically corrects the treatment delivery through the robotic arm – without the need to manually reposition the patient or interrupt the treatment, slowing down the process.
  • Less pain and faster recovery – Cyberknife© provides a pain-free, non-invasive alternative for patients, including those diagnosed with previously inoperable or surgically complex tumors.
