Child Development at Carilion Clinic in Virginia
The Child Development Clinic is a collaboration between Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital and Virginia Department of Health (VDH). Our clinic provides neuro-developmental assessment and evaluation for children from birth to eight years of age, and older as appropriate. Children are referred for a variety of suspected developmental disabilities and learning disorders including:
- Developmental Delay
- Speech and language delays and disorders
- Fine and/or gross motor delays and disorders
- Cognitive delays
- Sensory integration dysfunction
- Autistic spectrum disorders
- Attention problems
- Behavioral and emotional problems
- Learning disabilities
We accept new patients who are aged 0-8 years, and older as appropriate. Each child’s evaluation is driven by the individual needs of the child and family. We also place a strong emphasis on care coordination and case management. A physician referral is required.
The Pediatric Neuro-Development Team
The pediatric neuro-developmental team is led by:
- Kathryn Kerkering, M.D.
- Greg Robinson, Ph.D., L.C.P.
- Tara Mitchell, Ph.D., L.C.P.
Our extended team incorporates child psychology, educational consultation, physical and occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, pediatric nursing and clinical social work.
We work closely with an education specialist who offers school-based recommendations and coordinates follow-up plans to ensure implementation.
