Chest Pain Program

Chest Pain Care at Carilion Clinic in Virginia

Carilion’s Chest Pain program provides an advanced “plan of action” for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients experiencing chest pain.

The Chest Pain program links the emergency departments in six Carilion hospitals – Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, Bedford Memorial Hospital, Carilion Franklin Memorial, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and Carilion Giles Community Hospital – with a standard response for teams of health care professionals and the use of technology to quickly diagnose the cause of chest pain.

The program is based on a high degree of teamwork using consistent chest pain evaluation protocols for assessment and treatment. Patients who meet the criteria for the Chest Pain program protocol are quickly evaluated and provided medical treatment; some may be admitted, held for further evaluation or transferred to the Chest Pain Center at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Heart attack patients may also fast-tracked to life-saving care through the Heart Alert program.

Non-heart attack patients may be held for further evaluation and may be monitored on an outpatient basis. Others may be admitted or discharged for appropriate follow-up treatment at any time during the evaluation period.
