Carilion Clinic Breaks Ground for New Carilion Giles Community Hospital

Pearisburg, VA - April 11, 2008

The groundbreaking of the replacement facility for Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital took place on Friday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at the former Dogwood Farm property in Pearisburg, Va.

The groundbreaking event included remarks from James Tyler, hospital administrator, Congressman Rick Boucher, James Hartley, chairman, Carilion Clinic Board of Directors, and Ed Murphy, chief executive officer, Carilion Clinic. Other highlights included an unveiling of the new facility name and logo.

"This is an incredible thing for our community," Tyler said. "A hospital brings so much benefit, economic and health-related. The outstanding staff of this hospital and the people of this region have supported each other for so many years, its wonderful that we will have a facility to be proud of for generations to come."

The hospital will be renamed Carilion Giles Community Hospital to honor the citizens of Giles and it’s neighboring counties, who have supported the staff’s efforts during the application and planning stages.

Site preparation is already underway to prepare for construction of the $50 million, 85,000 square-foot hospital. The new facility is 25,000 square feet larger than the existing hospital and will have room for additional services, including stereo-tactic breast biopsy, nuclear medicine and rotating specialists.

The new hospital is expected to be completed by spring 2010.
