A Healthy Pregnancy

Planning a Healthy Pregnancy

At Carilion Clinic, we understand that pregnant women have a lot of questions and need to know they are making the right choices. As the region’s largest provider of maternity care and childbirth services, we provide exceptional care from pre-conception through post-partum follow-up.

Prior to becoming pregnant, an appointment with an obstetrician can be very helpful. The doctor can perform a full physical, gather a personal and family medical history, and assess lifestyle issues that may impact a healthy pregnancy. To find a Carilion Clinic obstetrician near you, visit our Find a Doctor section.

Being in good health and maintaining a healthy weight are essential to a successful pregnancy. Women who are 10 percent or more underweight and 20 percent or more overweight are at an increased risk for developing complications during pregnancy. If you are having trouble getting pregnant, your gynecologist may refer you to our Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology Clinic.

Once you are pregnant, you’ll find we provide pre-natal education on a variety of topics, such as nutrition, infant safety, breastfeeding and childbirth. There is even a class for grandparents-to-be. Several classes are offered free of charge or require a small fee. Visit the Events and Classes page for all our offerings.

If your obstetrician believes you or your baby need more specialized tests, he or she may refer you to our Prenatal Diagnostic Center. Here we offer comprehensive services, such as genetic counseling, first trimester screening, amniocentesis, fetal echocardiogram and ultrasound.

Prenatal Nutrition

One of the best ways to care for an unborn baby is by eating properly. A pregnant woman should be consuming the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, fat, minerals and vitamins to help the baby grow. Folic acid intake is especially important during pregnancy. It can be found in leafy green vegetables, dark yellow fruits and vegetables, liver, legumes and nuts.

This is also the time to increase calcium consumption, which will help the baby grow strong bones and teeth. Calcium-rich foods include milk, milk products, sardines and salmon with bones, collard, kale, mustard and turnip greens.

All pregnant women are advised to avoid alcohol, drugs and smoking.
